Workspace ▸ Open takes a .smcworkspace path. Opening a workspace also registers it in the index, so it appears in the switcher from then on.

The switcher is built from the workspace index, not from a recent-files list. The difference matters: a workspace you registered a year ago and have not opened since is still there, because the index lists workspaces by name rather than letting them age off the end of an MRU.
