What sqlmc is: Getting it

sqlmc comes with the installer, and is also a standalone zip for Microsoft Store installs and build agents.

With the installer from the download page, sqlmc is already there. It sits inside the app's folder and the installer puts that folder on your PATH, so open a new terminal after installing:

sqlmc --help

If something cannot rely on PATH, such as an MCP client, the full path is %LOCALAPPDATA%\SqlMulticast\current\sqlmc.exe. It does not change when the app updates, and sqlmc updates with the app, so the two are always the same version.

The Microsoft Store version of the app does not include sqlmc. Download sqlmc-win-x64.zip from the download page instead, extract it anywhere and add that folder to your PATH. It needs the .NET 10 Desktop Runtime, and it differs from the installed copy in three ways:

  • It does not update itself. Download a newer zip when the app updates, because the app and sqlmc read and write the same versioned files.
  • It is not the Store app's copy, so it does not see that app's settings, workspace index, saved passwords or sign-in. Point it at a workspace with --workspace or SQLMC_WORKSPACE and pass passwords as SQLMC_SECRET_<REF> environment variables.
  • Its path is wherever you extracted it, so give an MCP client that full path.

From a source checkout, run it with dotnet:

Running sqlmc.exe from a build output folder and printing its version.
Running sqlmc.exe from a build output folder and printing its version.
dotnet run --project src/SqlMulticast.Cli -- list coverage --list "All Prod"

Every example below is written as sqlmc …. Substitute dotnet run --project src/SqlMulticast.Cli -- if you are running it from a checkout.
