Environment and variable

The workspace says which variables exist and how each renders.

The workspace says which variables exist and how each renders. An environment says what they are worth. Those are two separate files and two separate decisions.

The variable editor: the workspace declares each variable and its type, and each environment supplies a value.
The variable editor: the workspace declares each variable and its type, and each environment supplies a value.
  • A declaration is a name plus a type: text, identifier, number, or raw. The type decides the quoting, once, where somebody knew what the value was. A script writes {{schema}}.Audit and gets it right without deciding at every usage site.
  • An environment is a column of values. Selecting a different environment changes what the next run substitutes, without touching a script.
  • A variable an environment leaves unset substitutes as the SQL keyword NULL, unquoted, whatever its declared type. An undeclared variable is a hard failure instead.

There is one scope. A {{token}} means the same variable in every script in the workspace; there is no project or per-script layer that can shadow it.
